Potter Rocks Round-up
While this started out as a blog piece, it was decided that all the personal drama would be best left out. Therefore if you're interested in a personal account (with drama, and a bit of hanging out with the bands afterwards, although nothing risque was mentioned) then check out this Myspace blog from Lauren.
The show was supposed to begin at 6pm, but they were a bit late as there was a delay with the PA. Nobody minded though, because they completely WROCKED that library!
First up was Bella and the Death Eaters, aka Emma. She sang "Become A Death Eater" (with the immortal line "If you become a Death Eater, you get a really cool tattoo, it glows in the dark when the Dark Lord's calling you." Her other songs went down really well too, "Molly Weasley", "Everyone Loves Snape", "Slytherins' Lament", "Dear Moony" and "Draco Lover". She was having some trouble with her guitar chords as she was very nervous and this was affecting her hand, but she gave a brilliant performance nonetheless. She finished her set with a cover of Draco and the Malfoys' "My Dad is Rich", which was a nice touch.
Next were The Black Sisters. They were wearing t shirts with "The Black Sisters" on them, and their names, so it was a bit funny seeing people wearing tshirts that said "Bellatrix", "Narcissa" and "Dobby". They were pretty amazing though, the contrast between the two girls was quite funny because Narcissa (Ally) was just standing there singing whereas Bellatrix (Lili) was dancing around like a mad thing. It made photos look weird when one came out great and the other was all blurry! The songs they played were: "We Love Potter Fans" (to American Idiot by Green Day), "Mugglecast" (to This Love by Maroon 5), a song which may or may not have been called "Killing Muggles" (no one seems to know, but it was to Umbrella by Rihanna), and was kind of catchy, although they asked everyone to sing along with "Muggles! Muggles! Muggles!" etc, but nobody really did. Then they played this one called "Harry and Ginny", which is so irritatingly catchy that it got stuck in everyone's heads...That was an original song, and they finished with another original one, called "Voldy Is Our King", where Amy (aka Romilda Vane and the Chocolate Cauldrons) helped out on keyboard at the end.
After them came RiddleTM, giving what has been argued was the best performance of the night. Identical twins Georgia and Victoria were absolutely brilliant live. They started off with "Ode to Voldemort", after which everyone was instantly hooked. They also performed "Thestrals" and "Look At Me" (such a sad song!), then Georgia switched from keyboard to guitar and they performed Draco" and "Luna Lovegood". They managed to sell the highest number of CDs on the night, no doubt mostly on the strength of that performance!
Next there was a break, during which came possibly the last thing anyone would expect to find at a wizard rock concert - Irish dancing. It turned out that the guy who did it (Jack! From the Misuse of Muggle Artefacts Office!) had been talking about it, and the show's organisers - Jess and Amy - had overheard and persuaded him to perform. He explained that it was a 'devil's dance', though poor Amy stood up at the mic and tried to introduce it as a "wizard rock Irish jig..." or something, which unfortunately didn't work so well since no one had a clue what she was talking about! Still, he was really good.
Next up was Amy herself, performing as Romilda Vane and the Chocolate Cauldrons. She was wearing the most amazing spangly tights...although apparently they were really uncomfortable. She was really good though, she sang "Hallowe'en at Hogwarts", "Hogwarts: A Mystery", "Frozen", "Godric's Hollow", "Romilda vs Myrtle" (which is hilarious, as it's about Romilda and Moaning Myrtle both being in love with Harry, and was intended as a duet for her and the Moaning Myrtles, which is just awesome), and "Don't Call Me Dumbly" with Georgia from RiddleTM, which is hysterical. It went down really well, and she was wearing a Gryffindor scarf, brave considering the amount of Slytherin garb there seemed to be in the crowd!
At this point, the most amazing thing happened. On the stage, a whole bunch of girls appeared...Emma, Amy, Georgia, Lili and Ally, Cathy from Siriusly Hazza P and her friend Lena who was dressed as a cat. And they performed The Mysterious Ticking Noise from Potter Puppet Pals! It was absolutely brilliant. Everyone was just sitting there wondering what was coming, and then they just all started chanting. As soon as the "Snape, Snape, Severus Snape...DUMBLEDORE!" began, everyone started laughing and going "oh!" because they recognized it! An amazing atmosphere.
After that came Jess, aka Miss Metamorphmagus. Her multicoloured banner was VERY Tonks! She performed "The Marauders' Map", "Under the Full Moon" and "I'm a Ravenclaw" on her guitar, in her shirt and Ravenclaw tie. Excellent to have a proud Ravenclaw performing, even though it was such a short set!
Finally Siriusly Hazza P came on, all snazzy in their matching black outfits and fluorescent tights in yellow, pink and blue. They made everyone stand up, and they performed "Harry Turtle" (which made everyone laugh because they had to explain first that they didn't make it up, there really was a part in one of the books where Harry is described as being like an upturned turtle. Really.), "We're 'avin a Whale of a Time", "The Ballad of John Simons" (which is brilliant, in case you haven't heard it, it's about Harry waking up and discovering that it was all a dream and he's really called John, and he has been in a coma for years. It's so funny), "Love Song for the Marauders" (which has the word "smashing" in it. That doesn't get used enough in wizard rock), and my favourite, "Harry Love Songs" It was really funny because when they were saying "Ewww" about snogging Neville, someone in the audience shouted "Neville rocks!" They also covered The Moaning Myrtles' "And Then I Died", which was great because there was a chance the audience might know the words to that, and their harmonies were awesome.
And then most of the girls came back on stage and they performed "Save Ginny Weasley" by Harry and the Potters. It was so good, people were able to sing along, what a great way to finish off the night!
